I have been a news junkie since high school, always choosing to watch the Today Show as I got ready for school. Not much changed through college and as I worked at various jobs post-graduation, always preferring to start my day well informed. These past few months, however, I’ve been turning the news on less and less. Every day it’s some version of the same sad, outrageous story, painting a dark picture of our society. Another man accused of harassing countless women. Another innocent life taken for no reason at all. Another bombing. Another tasteless politician.
Where is the good?
In a broken world full of broken people we are tempted to get down and forget about the One who gives comfort and joy.
Our God is good.
Whatever craziness happens today, tomorrow or next year doesn’t change the fact that He is good.
Regardless of what our circumstances may look like, He is good.
Even through the sadness His light shines. One thing I have noticed is He tends to use, as His light, whoever is willing to love their neighbor.
Last week, I saw His goodness on display when we went to dinner with the whole family. Annie sat on the end in her high chair and, as per usual, she turned around to smile at the lady at the table beside us. She was older and sitting alone. Her eyes looked heavy as she looked up to see Annie grinning at her. She glanced up but then immediately looked down at her plate and took a few more bites. I encouraged Annie to turn around and eat her food and not stare at someone who wanted to eat in peace but she was persistent. She turned around and waved, then said “Ho Ho Ho” in the lady’s direction. I looked over and the biggest smile came across that sweet lady’s face, changing her whole demeanor and causing Annie to squeal with delight. She and Annie talked back and forth the rest of the meal, and she wished us a Merry Christmas on her way out.
When we show kindness and compassion to others, His goodness is pouring through us. As believers, it’s our privilege and responsibility to spread His light and love to others.
We are told over and over and over again in His Word that He is good:
“The Lord is good to all; He has compassion on all He has made.” – Psalm 145:9
“I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; apart from You I have no good thing.” – Psalm 16:2
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” – James 1:17
So today, I’m turning off the news and resting in His goodness.
I’m going to quit complaining about what’s wrong with this world and get busy changing it, one person at a time.
~ O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy ~
