7 little things you can do to take better care of yourself this week

Life is busy and most days are full, and if we’re being honest, there aren’t enough hours in the day. Sadly, often times the the last thing we think about is taking care of us and I don’t know about you, but that leaves me exhausted – mentally and physically. For example, I got into bed the other night after a particularly long workday and fighting Annie during bath (where she pooped, TWICE) and told Taylor “my hair hurt.” We laughed but I knew I needed to slow it down and make time for a bit of self care.

PSA: taking care of ourselves IS taking care of our families, our relationships, and our careers. It’s an investment in our future – in our ability to keep on being productive in the many roles we play. If we don’t care for ourselves we’ll inevitably be too exhausted to care for our people.

If you’re limited on time and find yourself stretched a little too thin, maybe try one of these to sneak in some self care this week:

It’s no secret we need to be drinking more water, and if you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. Keep a cute glass or bottle full of water – throw in some fruit for flavor if that’s your jam – and challenge yourself to how many times you refill. It’s a free and easy way to energize you because the more H20 you drink, the better you’ll feel.

Go outside

Even if you have five minutes, go outside and just breath in that fresh air. Even better if you have time for a brisk walk around the block.

It’s amazing what a daily 10 minute stretch session can do for your body – and mood. Before you reach for the shower or coffee, take a few minutes to stretch it out and wake up your body. When you’re ready to fall asleep at your desk in the afternoon, take a few to stretch your arms and legs and wake up that tired nervous system.

Chat with a friend

Whether on the phone or across the table at your favorite coffee shop, connecting with a friend makes everything better. No man is an island and it’s so important to keep your girlfriends close, especially when life gets busy.

Eat fruit

Fruit is good for you and has natural sugars, plus while in season, it’s delicious. I’m also a fan of adding them to your favorite muffin or cobbler because, treat yo’ self.

Whether it’s a recap of the day in your journal, notes from a particularly moving message from church or something funny your kiddo did that day, writing your thoughts down is a beautiful release….and fun to read later. Not your style? Try writing a “thank you” or “just because” note to a friend because expressing gratitude reminds us how good we have it.

Take a bath

I had forgotten about the magic of hot water and bubbles until I brought this back the other night and let me tell you, it was a game changer. Grab a candle and your favorite book (my recent faves) and just soak. I challenge you to find something more relaxing.
